For over thirty years, I have been putting the show into business and the business into shows. Before drama school, I graduated from law school and both professions shape my career.
On stage, it has been my honour to play some of the great roles: from Brick Pollitt in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof to Atticus Finch in To Kill A Mockingbird. On television, I matured from a spoilt rich-kid on Gloss into a ruthless business baron in Filthy Rich.
But that’s enough about the shows. In 1992, when our largest theatre shut its doors, the restoration of a professional theatre company to Auckland became my business, if not my mission. Over the next decade, I served as ambassador, advocate and artistic director of what rose proudly from the ashes, the ‘Auckland Theatre Company.’ To its artists and audiences, sponsors and funders; to its most loyal subscribers and a generation of schoolchildren seeing their very first play, it was my privilege to communicate the message and the magic of theatre, as it had been communicated to me.
Later, I had the opportunity to augment and apply this unique skill-set as the director of AK03, the inaugural Auckland Festival.
On stage and backstage, I’ve worked as an actor, director, writer, agent, trustee, MC, speaker, presenter and host. Now that’s what I call show business!
