One of New Zealand’s most acclaimed thought-leaders on equity and inclusion, Alison (Ali) Mau brings sparkly humour and deep insight to her conference and event speaking. Whether it’s an after-dinner speech or a keynote, Ali effortlessly weaves tales from a starry career in broadcasting and print media (TVNZ, Mediaworks, Stuff) with the ups and downs of her more recent work establishing a national tech charity start-up.
As an MC she’s widely known for a special ability to control a lively crowd of any size with charm and poise, gives a terrific adlib under pressure, and has an attention to detail that ensures your event runs smoothly no matter what happens on the night.
Ali has made a specialty of conference MC work, combining her experience of many years as a top-flight interviewer and radio host, with an investigative journalist’s ability to connect with any subject matter or panel participant, no matter how complex. She is an unforgettable addition to any conference or special event panel.
Ali even has an offering for sports audiences, having recently taken herself and her horse Bex from hacking on the beach, to national glory at the Horse of the Year show.
Testimonials
We were thrilled to have Ali Mau join us as a panellist at the AMP Pride Panel discussion event. The purpose of the panel was to celebrate the diverse LGBTTQIA+ community and to continue AMP’s journey in raising awareness about issues affecting the community, including bullying, discrimination, and mental health challenges. Ali, along with Drag King Hugo Grrrl and Katie Bhreatnach, AMP’s GM of Legal & Governance, brought incredible weight and substance to the discussion. Ali’s insightful contributions and personal stories resonated deeply with our audience, helping to create a safer, more visible, and more inclusive world for rainbow communities. The event was well attended, and we received fantastic feedback from those who participated. Ali’s ability to offer great insight and share her personal experiences was invaluable. We would be keen to have Ali be part of our future events.

We were incredibly fortunate to have Alison Mau as the MC for our recent 'Traumatic Brain Injury- The Hidden Cost of Violence' conference. Guided by our mission to enhance prevention strategies, support systems, and survivor-centred interventions through knowledge exchange, collaboration, and innovative solutions, Alison's extensive experience as an investigative journalist, particularly her impactful work in the sexual harm space, equipped her with a unique ability to hold the necessary space for the sensitive and complex topics discussed during the conference. This was particularly crucial given the heightened and intersectional subjects of intimate partner violence and traumatic brain injuries. Alison demonstrated a unique ability to hold the audience's attention, seamlessly linking sessions together to ensure a smooth flow of the event. Her warm and engaging presence, coupled with her adeptness at managing the audience, kept us on track with time without feeling rushed. She exhibited remarkable flexibility and professionalism in adapting to sudden changes in the schedule, ensuring the event continued seamlessly. Additionally, Alison was genuinely engaged in the learning and showed tremendous support for the keynotes from around the world and across the country. Her contribution was invaluable, making the conference a resounding success.

It was such a pleasure to work with Ali Mau on our New Zealand Women ’s Leadership Symposium. Ali put herself forward as a speaker for the event and we are so glad she did as not only was her presentation really well received by all of our participants, but Ali went above and beyond to join us at our online event, battling inclement weather, lockdowns, and IT issues. Ali’s presentation was insightful, educational, and moving. Our participants loved her speech and were inspired by drive and determination. Ali was a fantastic addition to our line-up, and I hope we can work together again.

We were incredibly fortunate to have Ali Mau lead our International Women ’s Day 2021 staff event. Ali’s connection with the 2021 theme ‘Choose to challenge’ was prevalent as Ali shared her story and reasons for setting up the#MeTooNZ movement, as well as the impact on her and others. Ali was warm, approachable and friendly prior to, during, and after the event. Attendees valued Ali’s openness as well as her mahi in this important area. Thank you Ali!

After experiencing Ali Mau as an MC for the Rainbow Excellence Awards, we knew she’d be perfect for our first Diversity & Inclusion Leadership Conference and she was! Ali was such as pleasure to work with throughout. She was warm, approachable and agile in the lead up to the conference, showing a genuine interest in the topic as well as ensuring she understood our business and the people who bought it to life. On the day, she did a marvellous job of keeping the event moving seamlessly, whilst also giving it the gravitas, professionalism and energy required to ensure it was a stand-out conference.

Alison Mau was our MC for our Refugee Aid fundraiser at Hopetoun Alpha and she really helped make the night the success it was. Ali was very organised leading up to the event, and on the night she managed to control a very rowdy crowd whilst encourage people to dig deep in the auction and keep the night flowing. She genuinely cares about the refugee crisis and her efforts were very heartfelt and sincere. We hope Ali can be our MC again next year as we totally recommend her to anyone wanting a gifted, professional MC with a great sense of humour.
