Biography
Awhimai Fraser is a singer, actor, songwriter and multidisciplinary creative from Aotearoa New Zealand, with whakapapa to Waikato, Ngāti Pūkenga, Ngāi Tāmanuhiri and Ngāti Kahungunu.
She plays Matangi in Disney’s Moana 2 and features on the film’s original motion picture soundtrack, which received international recognition including nominations at the American Music Awards and Golden Globes.
A graduate of Whitireia Performing Arts, Awhimai has starred in musical theatre productions including & Juliet as Anne Hathaway (G&T Productions, 2026 national tour), Into The Woods as Cinderella (Fortune Theatre), Grease as Sandy (Wellington Musical Theatre), Mary Poppins as Miss Lark (The Court Theatre), Hairspray as Lorraine (Wellington Musical Theatre), and Edges with Rebel Theatre.
Her theatre work includes The Mystery of Edwin Drood as Edwin Drood / Dick Datchery / Alice Nutting (Circa Theatre), Red Riding Hood as Red Riding Hood (Circa Theatre), The Beautiful Ones as Hana (Circa Theatre), and Toi Time: Live Concert as Māia with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra.
Awhimai has performed live for over a decade both nationally and internationally. Her recent concert work includes Hans Zimmer Live with the NZSO and Christmas Cheer as a featured vocalist with the Auckland Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Terence Maskell.
Awhimai lends her voice to the Reo Māori adaptations of Disney favourites, voicing Matangi in Moana 2 Reo Māori, Elsa in Frozen Reo Māori, and Dolores in Encanto Reo Māori.
Her recent voice work also includes DJ Julie in Baddies (Brown Sugar Apple Grunt Productions) and Honey in This Is Home (787 Media).
On screen, she has appeared in Shortland Street and four seasons of Ahikāroa, and plays Māia as a core cast member across five seasons of the children’s series Toi Time! She also features as a vocalist in Season II of Greenstone TV’s Happiness.
Awhimai also lends her voice to radio and television campaigns, writes and performs original music, and features vocally on soundtracks for Good Grief (TVNZ), VEGAS (TV2), TANGATA PAI (TV3) and Happiness.
